5G is the 5th Generation mobile network. It is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. 5G enables a new kind of network that is designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices.
5G wireless technology promises to reduce many of the frustrations of current connectivity challenges, such as dropped calls and slow download times, and offer additional benefits such as:
5G opens up new possibilities with a Massive Internet of Things (IoT).
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the rapidly growing network of connected objects that are able to collect and exchange data in real time using embedded sensors. Thermostats, cars, lights, refrigerators, and more appliances can all be connected to the IoT. Business Insider Intelligence forecasts that there will be more than 64 billion IoT devices installed around the world by 2026.5
Pretty much any physical object can be transformed into an IoT device if it can be connected to the internet to be controlled or communicate information. A lightbulb that can be switched on using a smartphone app is an IoT device, as is a motion sensor or a smart thermostat in your office or a connected streetlight. An IoT device could be as fluffy as a child's toy or as serious as a driverless truck.
Thanks to 5G, we’ll have washing machines that order their own detergent, refrigerators that monitor their supply levels, dialysis pumps that pump themselves and robots that enable doctors to perform surgery remotely, among other technological developments that haven’t even been imagined yet.
So with all of these promised benefits of convenience, efficiency and security, why are ~300,000 health experts, doctors, scientists, environmentalists and organizations across 214 nations appealing to the United Nations and Governments of all nations to Stop 5G on Earth and In Space8?
Frank Clegg, a 40-year veteran in the Technology industry, previously Microsoft Canada president, succinctly summarizes the risks and issues that 5G poses in this short 8-minute video.
5G does not replace existing 4G and 3G infrastructure, but adds another layer of antennas (not just a few but literally billions) to the current 300,000 cellular towers that exist today10.
In order to transmit the enormous amounts of data required for the Internet of Things, 5G technology, when fully deployed, will use millimeter waves, which are poorly transmitted through solid material. This will require every carrier to install “small cell” base stations every 100 metres11 or 300 feet - equivalent to every 3 to 10 houses in every urban area in the world.
These base stations are called small cells because unlike the 90-foot cell towers that 3G and 4G technology use, which are usually spaced one to two miles apart, these antennas are small enough to be mounted on top of utility poles, lampposts, buildings, and bus stops.
For those living in urban and suburban areas, it won’t be long before homeowners find 5G small cells mounted right outside or very near their homes. Needless to say, we can expect workplaces and educational institutions to also be saturated with small cells.
Additionally, 5G employs new technologies (e.g., active antennas capable of beam-forming; phased arrays; massive multiple inputs and outputs, known as massive MIMO) which increase our collective exposure to EMF radiation.
Because millimeter waves cannot travel very far as they are absorbed by humidity and rain and can’t penetrate buildings, as many as 30,000 satellites will be required to transmit and receive signals to and from users on the Earth in order to offer blanket coverage of urban and rural areas. Since the first operational satellites were launched by OneWeb in February, 2019, SpaceX, Amazon, OneWeb amongst other tech companies, are in this new “space” race. As of late May 2021, SpaceX had launched more than 1,730 Starlink satellites overall. The constellation is now providing broadband service in select areas around the world, as part of a beta-test program.12
These satellites will ultimately blanket the entire Earth in a field of millimeter wave radiation that none of us (humans and all life on Earth) can escape from or opt out of.
And the sad part is, despite repeated appeals by scientists, doctors, health experts and environmentalists, the rollout of 5G continues undeterred.
To fully appreciate the 5G health hazards and how to protect ourselves, it is important to lay the groundwork for what 5G truly encompasses. 5G technology is complex and still evolving.
First off, let’s clear up a common misconception. The designation “5G” on your router refers to 5.8 GHz, does not mean it is a 5G device as it is not operating as part of the 5G cellular network.
Table 1.0 below roughly summarizes the key components and characteristics of what constitutes 5G technology13.
5G Components | Download Speed | Deployment | Characteristics | Always On? |
true 5G Millimeter wave band (20 GHz & up) New to 5G |
Offers fastest download speeds (1000-3000 Mbps) Primarily an outdoor service |
Limited to dense, metropolitan urban centres; where lots of people gather (stadiums, arenas, convention centers, city centers, airports, college campuses, parks, metro stops) Housed in rectangular boxes resembling pizza boxes Antennas will be placed on poles, towers and buildings at existing macro cell sites |
Does not pass through walls, window glass, rain and even moisture suspended in air Need to be beam-formed in order to penetrate walls and windows |
Not always on. Only sends its beam-formed signal when a 5G-enabled phone that operates in the mmWave band calls for a connection. That mmWave 5G signal will only go into that house where a 5G-enabled phone is located, not into neighbor's houses. |
5G Lite Low to mid bands (600 MHz to 6 GHz) In use for 40 years since 1G thru 4G |
Realistically offers 100 - 200 Mbps) - roughly 3-6x faster than previous generation |
Majority of 5G deployment is in this range, and expanding rapidly. These 5G Lite cells and antennas are: 1) being added to existing 4G LTE macro cell sites, which are located roughly 1-1.5 miles apart, and 2) in residential neighborhoods as stand alone small cell antennas across the country. |
Easily pass through walls and windows of houses and they travel far, up to many miles |
Always on. Wide and strong. Advanced technologies push more cell signals into the same airspace at faster speeds with far more modulation than current 4G cell technologies. Even though it would be transmitting at 10-100 Watts, the 4G LTE or low band 5G signal from one of those small cell antennas could be as close as 30-100 feet from your house at the second story level. |
Because 5G utilizes not only the EMF frequencies used by 3G and 4G, but also higher millimeter wave and sub-millimeter wave frequencies, the risks to human health are correspondingly higher.
Latest research on the effects of 5G wireless communication on human health14 calls out the following risks:
The analysis of modern data on biological effects of low-intensity radiofrequency radiation (RFR) leads to a firm conclusion that RFR is a powerful oxidative stressor for living cells.16
Oxidative stress is a state that occurs when there is an excess of free radicals in the body’s cells. The body produces free radicals during normal metabolic processes. Oxidative stress can damage cells, proteins, and DNA, which can contribute to aging. It may also play a role in development of a range of health conditions, including diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.175G mobile networking technology will affect not only the skin and eyes, but will have adverse systemic effects as well, as shown below.20
As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Similar to x-Rays, 5G and EMFs are insidious, just because we do not see or feel them does not mean that our bodies at the cellular level are not being irradiated.
In real life, there is no way to isolate our exposure to just 5G frequencies (as outlined in Table 1.0) without also being subject to the radiation from 4G wireless and other EMFs - whether natural (e.g., geopathic stress or man-made electrosmog).
In the article, How to Measure and Reduce EMFs at Home, a Beginner's Guide, we outline detailed strategies and actions to mitigate your exposure to harmful EMFs. We briefly summarize these strategies here and call out additional considerations for 5G.
Be mindful when buying new appliances, thermostats or gadgets (wearables, airpods) as these are now designed as IoT devices with antennas, featuring wifi or bluetooth connectivity.
Consider the non-wifi, non-bluetooth version if available. At least, learn how to turn off these connectivity features if you don’t plan to use them. With your EMF meter, you can easily tell if you have completely turned off the antennas. When taking calls with your mobile device, use the speaker phone function. Do not put the phone next to your ear where your ear and brain will be irradiated.
If you read the small print that comes with your devices, you will see the recommended minimum distance from the body for cell phones ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters and for tablets it is about 20 centimeters. As explained in Table 1.0, 5G lite low to mid-band antennas are increasingly being deployed closer to urban and suburban homes as “small cells”. They are always on 24/7, and pass through walls and windows.
EMF professionals report measuring higher EMF levels in clients’ homes, especially in second story bedrooms because of these “small cells.” Against a recommended safe level of 10 microWatts per meter squared (uW/m2) or less, these bedrooms are measuring up to tens to hundreds of thousands uW/m2!24
Take action and learn how much 5G and EMF you and your loved ones are being exposed to with our 5G-ready easy-to-use EMF meter. Take measurements as guided in the How to Measure and Reduce EMFs at Home, a Beginner's Guide article. When it comes to protection from 5G and EMF radiation, always adopt as first principle: to eliminate and reduce your overall exposure. As an additional level of protection, our certified EMF protection devices neutralize the EMFs that you cannot eliminate and offer protection at the cellular level for you and your entire family.
